Kung Fu

Become mastery.

Steel the mind and the body follows. Warrior monks drilled endlessly for years to become masters of their bodies, minds, and spirits in the pursuit of perfection.

Old training has purpose in modern settings, but like everything, it should evolve. We combine the rigors of perfection from before with the modern science and safety of now.

Through our extensive, thoughtfully planned curriculum, you will watch yourself grow into the warrior that was within the whole time.

Learn the Classics

Traditional kung fu is learning to move as someone did hundreds of years ago. Our curriculum pulls from both Hung Gar and Shaolin to develop a well-rounded practitioner.

Train with Purpose

Kung fu has in modern times been plagued with exaggerated claims of mysticism mixed with supernatural skills. You will not learn "Death Touch" from us. Instead, you will learn technique that actually works.

Kung fu has roots in Zen Buddhism and is cousins with yoga. To truly excel, you must learn to train with presence and confront your worst enemy--yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kung fu?

Literally, kung fu (功夫) translates as "accomplishment through time and effort". In modern Western connotations, however, it has come to stand in as an umbrella term for all Chinese martial arts. Kung fu actually has hundreds of different styles, and typically styles will be categorized as either monastic (as in taught originally within monasteries) or familial (passed down within a family), hard or soft (as a paradigm of movement), or Northern or Southern (depending on origins).

What style of kung fu do you teach?

Traditional dogma preaches that you don't mix kung fu styles. We're not very dogmatic. We teach a blend of Shaolin, which tends to be faster, more fluid, and more acrobatic, with Hung Gar, which tends to be rigid and powerful. Further, we also have adopted different approaches from sources such as muay thai, judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and yoga.

Do you have a rank structure?

While we tried very hard to do away entirely with a rank structure, we found that the sheer volume of technique requires at least a modest backbone.

Our system has five ranks before reaching the instructor (read: black belt) level: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Practitioner. Each rank is denoted with a different color shirt. This is the only "uniform" that we have.

Do you hold rank evaluations?

We do. Over the decades of experience we have had in traditional kung fu, we have found great value in training hard for the next level. Testing forces the student to pressure-test their abilities, and the longer tests require that the student transitions from a hobbyist to a martial athlete.

We have a small testing fee of $20. This covers the rental of the space and the cost of your next rank's t-shirt, if you pass.

There is no guarantee of passing, even from the first level. Any rank achieved by the student is earned through their hard work and perseverence.

No one is ever required to test, and if you don't care to advance, you will still be quite busy learning all we have to offer.

Do you teach weapons?

Yes! We teach staff, broadsword, straight sword, spear, and three-section staff.

Do I need any prior experience?

Most definitely not. Our curriculum assumes you have never trained any martial arts before and starts from the beginning. Each level becomes progressively more challenging, but never in an impossible fashion. After all, that's how you grow!

Are you ready to work?

To get started, we have a 30-day unlimited trial available to all potential students. There is no obligation or longterm contracts ever. You have nothing to lose (except maybe a few pounds).
